So thats how they do it! Natural Newstead

Ive had a fine time in recent weeks with Mistletoebirds.

The following sequence realised a long-held ambition to capture this species performing its party trick extracting a mistletoe berry.

As you can see the first step involves removing the top third of the skin, followed by a rapid series of pincer like manoeuvers that result in the  berry being consumed. This remarkable little bird feeds almost entirely on the fruits of various species of mistletoe in this case its Box Mistletoe Amyema miquelii.

Emus in the wild Natural Newstead

There was a time, not that long ago, when Emus roamed wild in central Victoria.

That time passed with the advent of closer settlement, perhaps in the late 1800s. Could they make a comeback? I think so.

What might it take? Despite their habit of laying eggs on the ground in conspicuous locations and the obvious threats this poses (think cats and foxes), this is not the major hurdle to an emu revival in this part of the world. Human persecution of emus is a historical fact but times and land use are changing. With a few wild emus in the district, leftovers from recent enthusiasms with emu farming, it may not be long before we can enjoy these wonderful birds in our midst again.

Deep Trouble #4: Uncle Rick Nelson troublemag

with Dr Mark Halloran

Or listen on Spotify

Uncle Rick Nelson is a Jaara Jaara Elder whose homeland is the land of Dja Dja Wurrung people. Uncle Ricks father is Uncle Brien Nelson, who is a significant figure in the Dja Dja Wurrung community. Uncle Rick is also a direct descendent of Henry Harmony Nelson, who is an apical Elder of the Dja Dja Wurrung. Uncle Rick first begins with a Welcome to Country ceremony, or what early settlers called Freedom of Bush, before discussing his role with the water pipeline that runs from the Grampians through central Western Victoria, where he acts as an advisor in regards to the protection of local Aboriginal sites. Uncle Rick also discusses the nuances of the Dja Dja Wurrung language and the importance of the two moieties, Bunjil the Eagle and Waa the Crow, to the cultural life of the Dja Dja Wurrung, as well as the mythology behind these moieties. He also tells the story of the devastating effects of early colonisation on the people of the Kulin nation as well as the country, with the introduction of 100,000 head of sheep and the same number of cattle, and the arrival of 60,000 white men within four years of European settlement. We then discuss the protectorate system that was set up in Victoria in an attempt to protect the Aboriginal people from the early settlers and how the descendants of Dja Dja Wurrung can trace their ancestry back to the Franklinford protectorate, which at the time was described as a successful failure.

Newstead Landcare AGM and presentation on ECHIDNAS Friends of the Box-Ironbark Forests

Newstead Landcare are delighted to have Dr Kath Handasyde from the University of Melbourne to speaker at their AGM this Thursday 18 October at 8 pm at Newstead Community Centre. The AGM will be speedy then everyone can all enjoy Kaths presentation about one of only two Australian egg-laying mammals the Echidna.

Echidna by Patrick Kavanagh

Echidnas are our most widely distributed mammals, occurring in all regions of Australia. They are classified as myrmecophages, feeding extensively on social insects, such as ants and termites. These are a rich and abundant food resource for which echidnas have clear adaptations, such as a long narrow snout, sticky tongue and powerful digging abilities. Echidnas are one of the relatively small number of Australian mammals that undergo hibernation.  Please come along to hear some more about these extraordinary animals in a presentation about their ecology and behaviour. Supper provided afterwards.

All welcome. A gold coin donation will be appreciated to help cover costs.

Life rarely goes according to plan Edgar's Mission Farm SanctuaryEdgar's Mission Farm Sanctuary

Edgars Mission -_-82

If youre reading this now chances are you re nodding your head in agreement, just when you think youve got things figured out, life seems to toss you a curve ball. But does she? Have you ever wondered that perhaps there is a grander plan? And that things do happen for a reason, guiding you to just where you need to be. Its not a case of luck or even serendipity, rather, that we are presented with enormous opportunities to learn important life lessons, helping us to evolve to be better versions of ourselves. On Friday just past I had the good fortune (there I go slipping to the default of luck), or should I say pleasure, of hosting a visit to the sanctuary by the journalist who required a pig for a photoshoot way back in 2003. And yes, you know what happened next.

It was so much fun catching up with Chris Beck and taking a trip down memory lane as we both mused, Who would have thought all this could happen just because one lets a pig into their heart and home?
